M1 Mac Mini, Displays wont turn on after wake from sleep

Ive a brand new M1 mac mini with 2 external displays 1 on USBC and another on HDMI. One is a samsung 32 4k and the other is an asus 28 4k. Both work perfectly with the mac ordinarily, however on wake from sleep often one or both of them wont turn back on. Turning them off and on doesn't seem to help but unplugging and replugging the cables into the back of the Mac Mini seems to get them working again. This seems to be rather random, sometimes its just one monitor sometimes its the other, sometimes i get graphical glitches on one of the screens (agains fixed by unplugging and replugging the monitor cable into the back of the mini). To me this seems like a software glitch with the graphics drivers I would assume the next update will fix this. I just wanted to flag it up to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

I just saw an article today on MacRumors about the most recent seeding of 11.2, which gives me hope because it included the following:

"When ‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 sees a release, Apple apps will be compatible with VPN apps and will no longer be able to bypass firewalls and other security tools.

According to Apple's release notes, the update also improves Bluetooth reliability and includes multiple bug fixes.

‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:
- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a Mac mini (M1, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter
- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save
iCloud Drive could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option
- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password
- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

The update addresses a bug that could cause external displays to show a black screen when connected to an ‌M1‌ ‌Mac mini‌ using an HDMI to DVI converter, and it fixes an issue that resulted in edits to Apple ProRaw photos in the ‌Photos‌ app not to save. It also includes fixes for ‌iCloud Drive‌, System Preferences, and more.

I have had this issue as well. After rebooting and removing a USB C Hub with and HDMI port (into which nothing was plugged it), I haven't had that issue. However, as I type this, the video jitters and cuts out for a second at a time. I'm using a Samsung U32J59x 32" display via DisplayPort. I notice that tapping the desk with my fingers causes the machine to move, which causes the jittering. It's like the display cable doesn't seat tightly in the Mac mini's female port. Never had that particular issue in my 2018 Mac mini.

Same sleep (and the bluetooth) issue with my Mini M1 connected to a Dell UltraSharp 38 monitor. I have neither issue w my MacBook Pro or the Mac Mini (intel) my M1 replaced.

Yup looks like the common theme is usc-c (Mac) to DP (monitor) which I was using as well. I just switched to hdmi to hdmi and no issues but it's only been part of a day. Thought about USB-C to USB-C but as you mentioned would like to keep the USB-C's open (have an ext ssd on the way)

Was hoping the recent 11.1 update would have fixed the separate bluetooth issue but it didn't. Good luck!

My problem is still occurring, and have been working with tech support from Apple. The latest suggestion was to use the Apple multiport adapter instead of the adapter I was already using. So far, it doesn't solve the problem, just changes the appearance of the problem. My computer still has difficulties waking from sleep, but now the screen just disconnects completely when it happens. The HDMI-ported screen works fine with no problem. The USB-C monitor is the one with the problems, with or without separate spaces.

Glad to hear they got back to you.

My problem's different though. I was getting a "sleepy" monitor occasionally - same as OP (so far it's been waking 100% since ticked then unticked Mirror Displays checkbox in displays setting). It's a non-DisplayLink Dell 2515H monitor connected via USB-C's 9in1 UGREEN HUB that has one HDMI port. Thus this monitor is deemed as a native external and the only allowed on M1 machines up to 6K. When it didn't wake up from sleep the monitor disappeared from my Displays completely and only two actions would bring it back:

  1. Unplugging and replugging all USB-C hubs including one with other DisplayLink monitors (unplugging HDMI from the hub didn't help)
  2. OS X reboot also solves the problem

The problem was also occurring on a fresh install of OS X Big Sur 11.1 with SSD reformat with no DisplayLink driver/other monitors connected. I tested with one Dell 2515H monitor connected via three adapters - Satechi Dual HDMI at 60Hz, UGREEN 9in1 and simple UGREEN USB-C to HDMI only adapter. I'm using quality Neet 2.0b HDMI cables and have swapped them to rule out bad cables.

Now that is weird. My experience with the M1 is that none of my monitors (BENQ, Chimei, CMV, Philips) connected via USB-C to VGA adapters will wake, but the Philips 2K monitor connected via HDMI does wake!

Additionally, I'm not so sure that it is solely a monitor issue: if I ssh in to the other minis connected via USB-C to VGA, the monitor then does wake while using the mouse and/or keyboard (both wired USB) has no effect until then. The ssh session takes many seconds to connect whereas when the minis are awake, it is almost instant.

No wake from sleep issues here too. I have an M1-Mac Mini too. I also have an LG.monitor. 32UN880. This monitor will not wake from sleep either. Sometimes if it is only sleeping for a short time 5-15 min, it may wake. I have a Logitech MX for mac keyboard. Tried it both ways, with the USB dongle and Bluetooth, both won't. I tried an apple USB wired keyboard... won't wake. Tried the dongle in a USB hub, tried it with the dongle in the USB spot on the backside of the monitor, still no wake-up. PAIN in the *** to put it mildly. To make it worse, this is my first mac as I had been a PC guy for over 20 years. Built computers for 20 years. The M1 is quite the machine, but it looks like this M1 was not fully engineered to go public. I can't believe I am the only one with this issue.Working with apple, kind of, for a few different days, trying LOTS of things. They were supposed to call me back a couple of days ago but didn't. Downloaded the new #2 patch for BigSur and that didn't work. Don't know whose fault this will be; LG or Apple. Anyone else with no-wake issues on an M1 mac mini

I believe that the problem is related to the fact that the device (monitor, usb device or anything that needs power) doesn’t receive enough power! The solution is to make a move so the computer supply the power. Moving the pointer fast will make it become bigger and the monitor will turn on! Move the mouse fast 2-3 seconds! If doesn’t help unplug and plug again the hdmi cable and disable sleep mode!

The same happens to me. Almost always the monitor manages to wake up, but at least once a day it does not happen. In some cases I solve by tapping the on button once on the back of the mac. But I almost always have to reconnect the thunderbolt cable.

I also connected the mac to an (hdmi) monitor, but it can't recognize it. Only by unplugging and reattaching the cable very numerous times (10, 20, 30 times) can I get the monitor to be recognized by the mac

I have also brought these settings, but cmq I was unable to have a correct operation.

If you leave with the lock screen, the monitor goes to sleep even if turned off, the only solution was to leave the screensaver active and turn off the monitor, but even in this case after a few days there is the problem that the bluetooth keyboard apple no longer spells the letters correctly I think because of something I don't know. The problem is serious and persists I was one day with assistance and after trivial and absurd tests we are all over again. My setup is thunderbolt cable 8K displayport 49 inch Samsung G9 monitor.

I am really disappointed, so far I had 4 macmini but if this continues I will have to find other solutions

I too have this problem.

1 display direct from the HDMI port

1 Huion pen display connected to via an HDMI adapter to one of the USBC ports

A third display connected via USB and running using a displaylink adaptor.

I don't generaly have any issues with that display running via displaylink, but the Huion pen display often refuses to come to life. The M1 appears to think it's there, because I can move my cursor between the two active displays "across" it (this doesn't happen if it's unplugged - my monitors get rearranged).

Sometimes it can be sorted by turning the display on/off (in fact I usually need to do this at startup to make it work) and sometimes the only way to resolve it seems to be a restart.

For me, the monitor plugged into the mini's HDMI port has no problems, and it's the monitor that is plugged in via HDMI cable> USBC adaptor > USBC socket in mini that has the problems and does not wake up. Sometimes it's resolved by switching the monitor on & off, sometimes by unplugging/replugging the USBC, and sometimes only by a restart.
