Apple only gives you the option to purchase/update the most recent Logic version, which is Logic Pro 10.6 at the moment. THe only place to get it is the App trop as laamusic already pointed out.

Usually, the current Logic version will only run on the current macOS and one version back (currently 10.15 and 11.0) . If you run an older system, then you are stuck.

BTW, GarageBand 10.4.1 is even more restrictive. It will only run on macOS 11.0

I noticed that message yesterday, too. Seems to be an App Store error. It appeared while I tried to update two apps that appeared in my "Updates" tab.

The solution was to click on the respective app name (in your case on "Logic Pro") to get to its full App Store page – the one with the description, screenshots, reviews etc. From there I was able to update the apps.

Another solution is to delete the old version from your Applications folder – most conveniently from the Launchpad (press F4), then pressing the Option key so that the icons jiggle and then clicking the "X" badge on Logic Pro's icon.

Then you may want to reboot your Mac to make this change "stick".

Then you can go to your App Store account tab where you see your purchases, and redownload the latest compatible version for your OS.

I had a similar issue recently and fixed it last night. I am on Mojave and wanted to update to Logic 10.5.1. I was told by Apple support to:

  • Trash the Logic app from the Applications folder (back up, if necessary). No need to empty the Trash either.
  • Reboot your Mac
  • Open App store and go to purchases. I don't know if this made a difference but I signed out then signed back in.
  • Download Logic - Message box will tell you that the latest version requires OS 10.15. Click OK.
  • Another message box tells you that it will download the latest version compatible with your OS. Click OK and begin downloading.

Hope this helps.

Something is severly broken with App Store on Mojave since a few weeks: I had similar issues with GarageBand installation. Luckily it's the same version as on High Sierra and Catalina, so it can be either copied over, or simply just linked with a symbolic link from its other location (as I have several bootable partitions).

No problem downloading from App Store on Sierra, High Sierra or Catalina.

Thanks gentlemen. I just got off a call with Apple support and they told me differently.

I was told that since the release of Big Sur they're receiving a lot of calls from users who can't access downloads in the App Store to versions of pro software that should be available to them.... and compatible with their current systems. Including Logic 10.5.1 . I was told that they're trying to fix the issue.

According to the guy I spoke with, Jeff, I should have access through the App Store but instead I'm getting the nondescript prompt "We could not complete your update. Cancelled".

So hopefully I'll get a link to it soon. I'll post any updates. Fingers crossed.

After two phone calls and 4 email, screen shots and "diagnostics" sent, there still is no solution that works for me. The Support tech Jeffrey Gilbert emailed today to say

"I know our engineers are fully aware of this issue and just yesterday they provided us with some basic troubleshooting steps (sign out of App Store, restart Mac, sign in and try download again). However, they are also asking for info about this issue and some specific diagnostics as well, so I know we may not have a full solution just yet. If you have time today to gather some diagnostics please let me know."

So itried all of the above (below) procedures. Signed out of the App store. Trashed Logic from my Apps folder. Restarted. Signed back into the App store. Got same message as always... "We could not complete your update. Logic Pro can't be installed on 'MacintoshHD' because MacOS version 10.15.7 or later is required". I've never gotten the option to update the version that is compatible with my OS.

I need to upgrade to Logic 10.5. I am NOT willing to chase my tail updating my OS only to then have to update my apps, my plugins, etc etc etc. C'MON Apple. WTF. Working Professional here! Ableton 11 is Looking VERY APPEALING..

Thanks for the update. At least we now have a confirmation of what I've suspected all along…

Oh well.

Speaking of diagnostics, earlier today I tried to capture the App Store network traffic with the corresponding function of Little Snitch to look out for suspicious messages or something. But I'm no networking expert whatsoever, so I didn't know what to look for. And thus found nothing.

Another month later, another set of diagnostics sent, another phone call with the rep Jeffrey, another mind blowing disregard for Pros by Apple. Still no solution. Still can't update the ONLY Pro Apple application that Mac "supports" for music professionals. Ableton Live is looking more and more and more appealing every single day. I already installed a copy. Incorporating into my daily workflow. I NEVER hear of Live users having issues with Ableton. That is NOT the case for Logic users regarding Apple.

I'm going to try to post this again but Apple keeps taking my posts down.

Apple doesn't care about Logic Pro X professionals because they are a HARDWARE company pretending to be a SOFTWARE company.

I'm switching to Ableton Live because the support is amazing and the features/ included plug-ins are way better than in Logic.

Bye Bye App Store.👋🏻
