Can I charge my new iPhone 12 mini with an older iPhone adapter?

I recently purchased an iPhone 12 Mini at my local Verizon store. The young man who sold me the phone insisted that if I charged my new phone using the adapters I have for my older iPhone I would ruin the new phone in 6 months. He said the new phone could "overcharge" if I left it to charge using an old adapter for a long period of time. Doesn't sound right to me but now I am worried. I bought a new adapter for use at home but am hesitating about buying one for my car.

There is no problem with using an older adapter. In fact Apple encourages it. See the following from the "What's in the Box" section of Buy iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini - Apple

  • iPhone
  • USB-C to Lightning Cable

As part of our efforts to reach our environmental goals, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini do not include a power adapter or EarPods. Included in the box is a USB‑C to Lightning cable that supports fast charging and is compatible with USB‑C power adapters and computer ports.

We encourage you to re‑use your current USB‑A to Lightning cables, power adapters, and headphones which are compatible with these iPhone models. But if you need any new Apple power adapters or headphones, they are available for purchase.
