Mac Mini M1 cant see files or folder on external NTFs drive

Just got a new Mac Mini M1, pretty impressed until I connected my old external NTFs USB drive.

It's mounted, can see it in Finder, Disk Utility etc but no files or folders are visible, just blank space, connected to windows PC all the files are there, it worked fine on my old Mini, only read but that's expected.

Tried 'ls' in Terminal, again nothing. Spent 45 mins on Apple chat, no ideas

Any ideas anyone????

Thanks

I had the same issue on a M1 MacBook Air 2020 just now. When mounting the external NTFS disk, I could see a fraction of the actual files on disk. Terminal didn't give me anything as well.

I then installed the Paragon NTFS for Mac trial, which is quite involved... but with everything enabled, and Paragon NTFS all files finally showed up.

I suspect the NTFS driver that's built in to Mac is incomplete.

FYI, macOS can natively read NTFS drives so it should not be an issue. I've seen some recent posts on these forums which mention the third party proprietary NTFS drivers only add write support and still use the macOS driver for reading. Personally I don't have faith in having Intel based drivers used on an M1 Mac since these drivers don't always work properly on the Intel systems. Having macOS manage the external drive is the best and safest option in most cases anyway.

Thanks for all the help people.

Still cant read any NTFS drives, even with the suggested software (which I have now removed).

Formatted 2 new external drives with exFat, these work well except if they are not ejected properly.

This has happened on two occasions when I couldn't wake the Mini and had to power down. When restarted disk cant be used. Tried to repair the disk with disk utility 'first aid' but this always fails with an error message, drives still ok in windows. This can only be fixed, as far as I can see, using this method https://gist.github.com/scottopell/595717f0f77ef670f75498bd01f8cab1 which has worked on different drives both times I have needed it. Hope it helps someone if this happens to you.

"There's nothing to "resolve". !?!?!

Really?!?

Please don’t minimize or discard this problem!

I have dozens and dozens of TB of photos and movies on NTFS HDDs that I can't see on my the Macbook Pro M1 I bought last week - even though supposedly I should. This basically means I can't use them for work. I can easily live without writing to

these hard drives but I CAN NOT live without reading them. For me this is a huge problem! ... and judging from this thread I'm not the only one that feels this way.

If I can’t solve this I have to return the Mac.

I am seeing a similar problem. But I find that I can see some of the folders just fine. While others show as blank in Finder. Is it related to how much buffer space M1 USB drivers allocate for reading the disk? Comments that M1 is not compatible with NTFS and suggestions to reformat are not of much help. It would have been nice to know when I bought my M1 about something that worked just fine with Intel Macs (i.e, reading NTFS disks) and doesn't work with M1.

This is a user to user forum so Apple does not usually post anything on these forums. If you want to talk with Apple then you must contact Apple directly by clicking the "Get Support" link at the top right of this page to chat with Apple tech support. You can also contact Apple corporate to voice your displeasure. You can leave product feedback here (do not expect any response):

Apple should be absolutely embarrassed for the major product issues (hardware & software) these last few years, but people keep buying their products so there is no motivation for Apple to change. I've seen Apple's downward spiral for at least ten years now so none of this is much of a surprise to me. I stopped recommending Apple products many years ago.
