Photos shows greyed out picture after editing / Keep folder structure

Hi!

All is the title, Photos shows grey images after I edit them. I thought that would be fixed when Big Sur comes fully public, but no.

Any suggestions?

Another point that bugs me from using Photos is the great option to keep folder structure. But the issue I see is that on the last level, Photos create on top of the last folder an album. I get the logic but then it gives users an unnecessary level with 1 element (i.e. last folder contains one album).

Sorry I know those are 2 issues, but those 2 keep me away from fully using Photos.

I can separate if admins prefer.

Thanks!

Does that grey image bug impact only Raw files? If so this seems to be a bug I am experiencing also, though I am on Catalina, not Big Sur - If it is the same problem I am seeing, not fixed in Big Sur, reverting edits to original will bring the image back to normal - after which you can edit again without problems.

The workaround I use is:

Import the raw files

Select them all (in all photos view)

CMD-E (auto enhance)

Image menu>Revert to original (while they are all still selected)

From then on they all work fine.

Just an add-on to Tony's suggestion: How are you editing the photos? With the native photos adjustments or with third-party photo editing extensions?

Photos 6 is showing some of my edited photos as greyed out, if the external editor added layers with transparency.

Are you using iCloud Photos? I am seeing some photos greyed out after editing them, while they have not yet been fully synced with iCloud. This changes automatically after waiting for the upload to finish.

Great. The reverting is usually necessary, if the photos has been edited in a different system version with adjustments, that the current version cannot recreate. For RAW photos, if the RAW Processing has been updated, for filters, if the filter effects have been updated, for photos with Portrait Lighting or Live Photos, if the algorithm has changed. And any edits you have carried over from Aperture or iPhoto have to be discarded, before you can add further adjustments.

My Panasonic DMC-FZ300 is not showing such behaviour, when I import the RW2 files. Have you applied any program settings in the camera, when you take the photo? There may be previews or thumbnails of the developed versions embedded in the RAW files, that need to be discarded. But Photos for Mac should be able to handle that.

I am having to discard edits made on my iPhone with iOS 14 or edits made on my Big Sur Mac, when I try to edit a photo on the Catalina Mac or Mojave Mac. iCloud Photos is no longer converting all edited versions for compatibility, when I adjust photos on one of my devices. I am trying to do all adjustments on the Mac with the newest system and stick to one device. That is making life with iCloud easier.
