Zoom wants access to download

Why does Zoom ask for access to downloads files? Is this app on my iMac safe?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.0

I am not familiar with this "Bruce Schneier", but after the initial inexcusable carelessness of that app, I do not trust that app's developer(s). It will never be installed on any of my devices unless I had a "throw-away" Mac not containing any personal or other info (and I just turned down two opportunities because I would have been required to install it). And, I would certainly not grant any access to anything to any app unless I could ascertain the purpose and ramifications first.

Thanks. However, the access request sounded more like they wanted access to general downloads on my Mac, not for the purpose of updates. Weird, I thought, and I do not do any Zoom meetings, just very infrequent distant relative groups. My Mac always notifies me of available updates, also. Just creeped me out, so I denied the request.

grmageek, I hope you had chosen "don't allow." I always choose that option when an app, which has no business knowing or wanting other information and access to places the app does not need, asks to do so.

I am wary of Zoom, due to what I have read about it, so have not put it on my iMac. I came on here, today, to find out any new information about the app's safety and reliability from people who have had experience with it and from those whom I would trust to be honest about it in this community support. I have a family meeting scheduled for later today, but still haven't installed nor used my browser to use the app. I will continue to do my research; your question helped with that, so thank you.
