cannot make bootable drive using CCC with M1 MBA

Have new MBA with Silicone(M1) chip

Used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy data partition to external SSD formatted APFS

Booted into recovery and installed Big Sur to drive.

When I try to boot from this drive I get the message that "the version of MacOS on this startup disk is out of date, use software update to install latest version and try again"

I have the latest version. I tried starting from preferences/startup and also from recovery mode and get the same error message. Am I doing something wrong?

Apple has not yet released a working version of one of the tools

required to clone the protected system volume of Big Sur for

Apple silicon which is what is holding up CCC. As a workaround

for the time being, you can install Big Sur on an external drive

and CCC will still properly clone the data volume. This gets the

protected system volume needed for booting but still lets CCC copy

your data drive.

Or, the alternative is to just use Time Machine until the issue gets sorted out.
