Am running Mojave 10.14.6 on imac (retina 5k 27-inch late 2015) with microsoft word 365 16.43 and 3 times this week it won't let me open word documents in my files .... now it won't even let me force quit word so am going to have to emergency shut down machine - the other day it took me over an hour and at least 5 or 6 restarts in order to open word - please let me know what is going on.

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Considering Office 365 if a Microsoft product, I am curious to see what they said when you asked them? When you do ask them please let them know the browser you use too, that may be helpful to them.
I most definitely will.... today the computer started flashing - i think there's something wrong with it!! Go figure.
Are you perchance, running any anti-virus products on your Mac?
