charger disk LED turns red

Why does the LED on the charger disk turn red after a few minutes of blinking green. There was no case on the phone.

The only thing I'd not tried was the hard reboot. It did not seem to work, twice. The first time the LED blinked green for just a couple minutes, then went dark. The 2nd time, the LED blinked green for less than 4 minutes, then went solid red. No case, face up, centered. Cables & wall charger are the ones that came with the charging pad & are all in excellent shape. Thanks.
