Apple Watch 4 and Ring notifications

I have an Apple Watch 4, an iPhone 11 Pro, and a Ring doorbell and a Ring camera in my driveway.

The driveway camera alerts work fine, sending a single alert to my phone and pushing a single alert to my watch.

My ring doorbell alerts used to work fine. But several weeks ago it started an issue where an alert shows on my phone once but then pushes the notification to my watch 4 times in a row (as separate notifications) for each ring alert.

Anyone know how to fix this?

looking at the ring forum's it tells us that to stop multiple notification on our apple watches we have to turn off rich notifications however turning them off means that we loose out on snapshot images that appear with your camera or doorbell notifications. So yes there is a fix however we loose out on features we should be getting. They only tell us this as they don't have a proper fix for this at the moment

Hi jeffreyfrommckinney,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are receiving multiple repeat messages on your Apple Watch. From what you've shared, it sounds like you'll need to review your notification settings for this device.

"Manage notifications

Your Apple Watch notifications mirror your iPhone settings, but you can customize the settings for each app. In watchOS 5 and later, notifications can be organized by app and grouped in stacks in Notification Center. For example, all your activity notifications can appear in a stack. You can also choose whether or not you get alerts for notifications, so they appear silently or not at all.

How to change how you get notifications on your Apple Watch

  1. Touch and hold the top of the watch face.
  2. Wait for Notification Center to show, then swipe down.
  3. Swipe left on a notification, then tap the more button.
  4. If you don't want to hear sounds or haptic alerts for that app, tap Deliver Quietly. Notifications for that app go directly to Notification Center on both your Apple Watch and iPhone, instead of showing you a notification with a sound or haptic alert.
  5. If you don't want to get notifications for that app, tap Turn Off on Apple Watch.

To see or hear these notifications again, swipe left on a notification from the app, tap the more icon, then tap Deliver Prominently.

Customize your notification settings

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap an app. Different apps have different options. To use the same notification settings on your Apple Watch and iPhone, tap Mirror my iPhone. Some apps allow you to customize your notifications. When you customize, you can choose from these options:
    • Allow Notifications: Notifications appear in Notification Center and your Apple Watch alerts you.
    • Send to Notification Center: Notifications are sent directly to Notification Center without your Apple Watch alerting you.
    • Notifications Off: The app sends no notifications.

  1. If you customize an app's notifications, you can also group notifications from that app. Tap Notification grouping, then choose an option: Off, Automatically, or By app.

If you can't customize an app, you can still turn off its notifications. Scroll down to the Mirror iPhone Alerts From section and turn off the setting next to the app.

Cheers!

This is not an Apple issue. This is a Ring-issue and just like all the other lacking support and compatibility issues, Ring has ignored this long enough to signal, that they are never going to care - not even for their paying customers.

I have the same problem, Multiple notifications on my Apple Watch 4 and one only, on the iPhone.

The first has no image and the other two does. So this is definitely something that was introduced with the rich notifications.

Being an app developer my self, this is a result of poorly testing.

Same here. It’s super annoying. What I do is hold down the watch crown when the first notification comes up, which summons Siri, then I hit the crown again to dismiss Siri. Still annoying but preferable from my perspective compared to hearing the 4 notifications.

It would be nice if the Ring team would get with the times and properly support the Apple Watch.

I guess there is a little bug in the Ring app which causes the push notifications issue. On my iPhone I first receive a push notification without the rich notification (no image) and 1 sec after, I get a new push notification which contains the image.

I think that the Apple Watch contains an issue when an app sends two push notifications at the same time, the watch bugs and shows 4 times a notification.

Anyhow. It is a weird behaviour. One day I experienced this with Snapchat too.

I'm also having the same issue. Apple Watch 4. Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but for me it only happens with my ring cameras that run on battery. I have a hard-wired ring doorbell that only sends one notification and a battery operated doorbell at my back door that does the 4 notification thing. Recently I purchased the new Ring Spotlight Cam - battery version. The motion alerts I receive on my watch are also received multiple times for that camera too.

Is anyone having this problem with hard-wired cameras/doorbells?

Sorry, no, it is not mirroring the notification settings of my phone. I only get the notification once on my phone but multiple times on my watch. The issue only occurs with 1 Ring device and not others on the same account. The issue only impacts my Series 4 watch. My wife has a Series 3 and does not experience the same issue. Ring tech support said to contact Apple since it’s only an issue on my watch getting push notifications from my phone. Others are posting in this thread with the same issue. How much more do you need to escalate it to a developer as a bug to be addressed?

I also have been having the same issue. I have a series 3 watch and I’ll get a Ring notification and I’ll see the Ring logo pop up on my watch for a split second, but I can’t look at it. It will pop up again 2 more times before I can finally dismiss it. It’s definitely a glitch and not a setting, because I get three notifications in about a 2-3 second span, and two of them I can’t even look at. Something has to be up with the Ring app I would guess, as it only happens to me with my ring app.

tldr: Ring doesn't support smart watch integration and rich notifications yet but they hope to. In the meantime multiple pop ups on the watch is likely.

Rich notifications have worked just fine on my Apple Watch 4 since they were released.
