Software update

I downloaded this but when I try to open it it says I need the update that I am trying to download. Software update is not in my system preferences.

If you are trying to do a software update, the place to find it is in About This Mac, under the Apple logo. In the lower right hand corner is an update button. Click on it and your Mac will begin any update that your model/year Mac can accept.
