Larry--thank you for your assistance. Apparently there was an additional iphone ios patch required--it showed up in a small window hidden behind my browser window. Once it installed on the connected iphone 6s, the 62 showed up in iTunes. Again--your assistance was helpful.

If you simply affirm the iTunes update, when you see the dialogue box, from iTunes, pequotjohn, iTunes will be updated to work with your iPhone.
Nice and simple.
It is unfortunate that the dialogue box left you with the wrong impression about what was going to be updated.
Go to https://itunes.com and download the latest version.
What are you trying to do with the iPhone and Mac?
synch it with iTunes. I do not want to upgrade the mac past Sierra because of software incompatibilities with Adobe products I own. I am running iTunes 12.8.2.3 on the Mac
It should be compatible with Sierra, but you may need to update your version of iTunes.
No updates show up for iTunes under the app store update tab
