Repeating Error: inappropriate ioctl for device, using HARDCODED very low disk threshold 3221225472 for volume_size: 128010158080

My 2010 iMac is slower than usual and always seems to have things running in the background, even without any application open.

Console shows a constantly repeating error: Inappropriate ioctl for device, using HARDCODED very low disk threshold 3221225472 for volume_size: 128010158080

My hard drive is not even half full and I have plenty of RAM for what I'm doing with the machine.

How can I fix this error?

Hi johnfromkeene,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We see you're having issues with your iMac running slower than expected, and we'd like to do what we can to help.

Start with the troubleshooting steps in this article: If your Mac runs slowly

You'll want to run First Aid in Disk Utility, in case there are some repairs needed, which Disk Utility can perform.

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

If Disk Utility advises to use macOS Recovery: About macOS Recovery on Intel-based Mac computers

Activity Monitor can show if there is a process using more CPU resources than normal, or if an app is using a lot of memory:

Activity Monitor Help

View information about processes

View CPU activity

View memory usage

Take care!
