First Time Apple Watch Purchase

I want to buy my first Apple Watch. However I don't have an iPhone (Preparing to get that soon). So I want to know : Do I "Need" an iPhone to have an Apple Watch or can I use the watch without the need to have the iPhone ? Is the Apple Watch "Stand Alone" ?
