What iPhones and iOS software are compatible with first generation iwatch?

1st gen watch will only update to watchos4 so in theory it should pair with an iphone 5 or higher with ios 10 or higher,in reality I've seen one paired to an iphone 11 but the owner said it was very difficult and took a lot of time to get the watch up and running.
