Need help recovering photos from dead MacBook pro

Hi,

I am trying to recover data from a dead 2012 MacBook pro I was able to remove the hard drive and plug into a 2015 MacBook air. I was able to see the Macintosh HD icon and could see all the applications file. But when I try to open photos I receive the error message: "Photos cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Photos works with this version of macOS. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and macOS."

So I guess it's trying to open the Photos app of the old hard drive but it is now on Big Sur. I will probably get the same error on Catalina. Does anyone know a fix for this? I tried Migration Assistant but still wasn't able to recover photo files. It's unfortunately not saved on iCloud. Very much appreciated.

Hi,

It has everything either read only or read and write. I'm afraid you might be right and that everything is gone. I just checked the storage availability and it has 730gb space available out of 750gb so it must have been wiped clean but I don't know how that was possible. Could it have been wiped during migration assistant? I find this extremely strange because it was a dead, unused laptop for 5-6 years and I'm only trying to retrieve old data now.

Hi

The photos are not in the app, they are in the library. The app simply opens the library, and accesses the photos from there, just like any other document. So if your library is blank, then the photos are gone.

But are you sure it is blank? It doesn't make sense that only your documents folders are wiped, but the rest of the drive is fine. Are you sure you are looking in the correct user folders?

Check that you have the correct permissions to be able to view the user folders. If you click the user folder, and open the information panel (CMD-i), what does it say about permissions at the bottom.
