You need a USB-C cable or adapter to connect to whatever port you wish to use on your 2014.
Wireless migration is easier though. There is a lot of "overhead" involved in the data transfer so a potentially slower wireless speed will not be the limiting factor. Use cables and adapters only if your wireless environment is hopelessly congested—which you would be already aware of.
Migration Assistant does not require an Internet connection. Unless your intermittent connections are the result of local wireless phenomena such as interference from competing wireless networks, wireless will be perfectly fine.
Thank you, am a bit leery of using my internet as it intermittently stalls that’s why I thought better to use a wire? Does migration assistant work on wired connection?

A cable connection is much faster, yes it is preferred.
The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot— you have one shot here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205749
If that opportunity has past, the second best way is use the Migration Assistant.
