I usually keep my work swipe access card in between my phone and my case, will doing this with the new 12 damage cheaper cards like hotel keys and other flimsy non-credit cards? I only use the lightning port and not MagSafe charging. However the 12 did stick to a magnetic part of my computer closure, would a card between the phone and another unexpected magnet ruin it?

I keep my iPhone 12 Pro in my shirt pocket. I was at a public (paid) parking lot the other day where they issue a cardboard ticket with a mag-stripe. Without thinking, I put it in my shirt pocket with my phone, and the mag-stripe got wiped out. The card could not be read in any parking payment machine, and I had to pay full price (full day) for my parking to get out.
So yes, and it makes sense that a magnet can cause these issues. Be careful. Anyone that says this can't happen is wrong. Magnets are magnets. Apple's Magsafe wallet contains a shield to prevent this issue with your cards, because it is very real.
