Hello, I have a "new to me" mid 2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7. I tried downloading GarageBand on it but it says that I needs Mac OS version 11 or later. Is it possible for me to download an older version of GarageBand?

Do not download from main window of App Store. Go into your account. It’s like your purchased history. You will be able to download previous last version for Catalina.
If you know the original owner, they might be able to download it from the purchases tab in the app store. If you had downloaded it previously, it might be there for you, too.
