When you redeem your gift card, the entire balance is added to your Apple ID. You can check your Apple ID balance:

"Sign out of the App Store or iTunes Store on all of your devices, then sign back in. This refreshes your Apple ID balance. Learn how to check your Apple ID balance."

For the new types of gift cards, yes. Check Your Apple Gift Card Balance - Apple

For the older style gift cards, the only option was redeeming them to the account and checking the balance as provided: "You can now redeem your App Store & iTunes Gift Cards into your Apple Account Balance, which you can use to buy all things Apple — including products, accessories, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more."

Ensure you redeem it to your daughters account, or it will redeem to your account and won't be transferrable.

There are no monthly fees and they should not expire, as long as the pin was not redeemed to any account. If you need more help, please contact Apple Support.
