Menu bar, Dock etc not transparent in Big Sur.

Updated to Big Sur, but menu bar, Dock, all Finder, Safari (other windows) are not transparent, just white/grey. I also have reduce transparency unchecked in system preferences. Any ideas?

Howdy,

Thanks for the screenshot. Looks like you have the settings correct for a transparent Menu Bar, Dock etc.

Usually when a setting doesn't appear to be working as I expect, I toggle the setting to see if it will take, maybe even with a restart in between.

If that doesn't help I test with a Safe Boot, or with another "Test" user to see if something else may be affecting it or if it's a user issue or system wide issue.

If it is with my account, I toggle a setting in the preference and check my Preferences folder sorted by date to see which Preference is affected, in this case it is com.apple.universalaccess.plist

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist

(If you don't see the Library folder, hold the Option key while you Go [menu] > Library)

In there is a Boolean setting "reduceTransparency" that should be set to "NO".

Disclaimer, Always have a backup before messing with system stuff and don't mess with Preferences if you are not sure about the results.

To test if that Preference file is messed up somehow, I would rename it to something else like "com.apple.universalaccess.plist_old" and if needed, restart to get a new one. I just renamed mine and a new Preference was recreated just by changing the setting in the Accessibility Preference, no restart needed.

If the newly created preference works correctly, great, if not you can always go back to the old one.
