This past Sunday I was informed that I needed to download an update for Safari. I did this (during a major thunderstorm, but never lost power) and everything seemed to go through properly and worked normally. I restarted my computer when it prompted me to do so. A couple hours later I tried to get on the internet and nothing happened. The icon bounced a couple times and Safari's name popped up at the top of my computer next to the apple icon, but no window opened. I tried to hit open new window and so on....when I got frustrated and quit Safari it told me me that I had like 7 windows open and did I still want to quit. I clicked yes and then another window popped up stating that Safari encountered a problem and needed to close unexpectedly. I reported it to apple like 12 times. When I called apple they expected me to pay for them to fix it, even though his explanation was "This version of Safari is probably not compatible with Tiger". The other issue is that my disc drive went bad a couple years ago and I never fixed it, so I could not re-install the original Safari. Can anyone help me fix my internet without having to pay a computer store??

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...

Safari encountered a problem and needed to close unexpectedly.

If you post a crash report we may be able to help you.

If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.

Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

I reported it to apple like 12 times.

You only need to "report" it one time. They will not contact you.

If your Mac is not within the one year limited warranty and you don't have AppleCare, then yes, you would have to pay. If you end up taking your Mac in for service, only go to an Apple store, or certified Apple repair provider.

    Chiroptera --

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
We're other Mac users here, asking questions and sharing solutions.

Try restarting one more time, and open up Safari from your Applications folder, rather than the dock.
    Any better?

    What do you mean here?
+The other issue is that my disc drive went bad a couple years ago and I never fixed it,+

I tried opening Safari multiple ways: moving it to the desktop and trying to open: same result; tried opening from applications: same result. And I meant that when I put a disc (any kind of disc: music, dvd, etc) into the disc drive it makes all sorts of noises and then 5 minutes later will spit it back out. I looked on the discussion board here to find answers and the only answer was that the drive was broken and needs to be repaired or replaced. I have not had the money to be able to do that so I just havent really used it or needed to until now. I also have restarted my computer multiple times and even shut it down for hours at a time (thinking that it needs a time out will work when it's done thinking). Everything I tried has the same result: nothing happens!!

Oh good Lord, today is not my day. I just tried to post a big long response so that you could help me, but it deleted it!! Anyway the jist of it was:
because I cant open the internet I don't have the ability to copy and paste the crash report here, it's really really long, but hopefully this information will help you to diagnose it:
    Version: 4.1
    Build Version: 2
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000008

Everything else is just jiberish to me and doesnt look like it's actually saying anything its just a bunch of numbers. And yes I know that they won't respond when I report it I was just really annoyed that when I was trying to keep my computer up to date that the updates would cause the problem. I will no longer be doing the updates.
And really thanks for the help.

    We'll just have to troubleshoot...

irst, try troubleshooting Safari third party plugins.

Go here: Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

    Re: Updates.

Here's the deal. If you have third party Safari plugins installed, that could be what is causing Safari to crash and otherwise poor performance. Those plugins may have been compatible with the previous version of Safari, but not the updated version.

Apple is not responsible for updating third party software.

A DSL connection may not be helping.

Ok so I thought that I was kinda tech-savy before but now I feel like I'm lucky that I know what a mouse is. Can you dumb it down for me please? What are add-ons and how do I know if I have them? And I'm almost positive that it's not my DSL because itunes store (which I thought was through the internet) works perfectly and my dashboard with the weather is sill giving me updated weather. I'm so sorry, I swear I am willing to do the work here I just have to know what you're saying LOL

Ok... love your sense of humor.

Open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder then the Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Tell me what you see in that folder.

And your MacBook is running Tiger v10.4.11 ?? Just making sure.

I looked on the discussion board here to find answers and the only answer was that the drive was broken and needs to be repaired or replaced.

*Bottom line here is that your MacBook hard drive is failing and needs repair or replacing. That's probably why Safari won't open.*

Do you have your install disc?

  • Chiroptera Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
Ok so in that window I have AdobePDFViewer, a disabled plug-ins folder htat has windows media plugin in it, DRM Plugin.bunde, Flash Player. plugin, flashplayer.xpt, Flip4Mac...gin.plugin, Flip4Mac...webplugin, iPhotoPhotocast.plugin, Java Applet...gin Enabler, Java Applet.plugin, JavaPluginCocoa.bundle, NP-PPC-Dir_Shockwave, nslQTScrip...Plugin.xpt, Quartz Co...webplugin, QuickTime Plugin.plugin, QuickTime...webplugin, SmartAccess Plugin and VerifiedD...gin.plugin. That's everything in there. I'm afraid to delete them like the link you sent me said to cause I really don't want to generate another problem from this one. So if you tell me it won't hurt anything I will do it. Also yes I still have the disc for installing, but it really wont work if I put it in. It will just be ejected and won't open anything. Also I was able to delete my cache and now I can make an attempt to open a new tab, but then it immediately closes and gives me the unexpectedly had to quit message this time with a new number at the end of that KERN blah blah blah one and that number if it helps is 0x0000000c
Oh and yes i'm sadly still running tiger and that version.
  • Chiroptera Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
and because my disc drive quit means that my hard drive is bad? Wouldn't I have noticed that like two years ago when it happened? Nothing else has gone wrong since. And why would that make my Safari not open right after an update? I'm just hoping that there is an easier (and free option) available cause I dont have the money to fix it and I really need my computer. There might be some sort of virtual cake I will send you if you are able to help me fix this LOL

    HI,

If the optical disk is broken, then you can't use your install disk to repair the startup disk if necessary.

    Try booting in Safe Mode

It takes a little longer then a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities)

Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    Click Verify.

At least this way you will know if there are problems with your startup disk before trying to troubleshoot Safari.

When you are finished click the Apple Menu / Restart.

Also I was able to delete my cache and now I can make an attempt to open a new tab, but then it immediately closes and gives me the unexpectedly had to quit message this time with a new number at the end of that KERN blah blah blah one and that number if it helps is 0x0000000c

If the startup disk is ok, post a crash report.

If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.

Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

ok so I did the safe mode start up and then somehow found mmy way to disk utility (I had to play around to find it, the steps werent there as you said- sorry) and then i found the verify button, but how am I supposed to know if there are problems with the start-up disk?
  • Carolyn Samit Level 10 Level 10 (95,975 points)
Once you click Verify, Disk Utility will check the startup disk. You have to wait and let it work. Disk Utility will report whether or not the disk appears to be ok or if there are errors that need repairing.

Remember, you can't repair the startup disk in Safe Mode, only with your install disc. But at least you will know if there errors.

Don't forget to check for free disk space. See Capacity and Available at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. *Make sure there is always a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*

  • Chiroptera Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
ok so I did it and I kinda did the proud of myself for being able to do it dance, but don't tell anyone. and it says "volume passed verification" and as far as the capacity it doesnt give me % it gives me GB's. Capacity is 55.6GB and Available is 30.3 GB. Is that enough??
  • Carolyn Samit Level 10 Level 10 (95,975 points)
    That is good news.

    Now for Safari.

Tell me what's in that folder.

Can you access a crash report now?
