When I right click on a photo from the internet, it includes a new tag besides the jpg. When I try to edit this photo in Preview it tells me to save as a tiff file. what's with this?

Any screen shots to help exemplify your issue ?

Have you tried a different browser to test?

Are there issues in other photo editing software as well, or isolated to your Preview.app

Can you provide a 'hot link' to a problem photo from the Internet, So I can see for myself, and test your workflow...

You should be able to right-click on an Internet image, and select either Save Image to Downloads, or Save Image as… and the image extension is already on the file. All you would then do change the basename of the image (optional), add a tag (optional), the save location, and click Save. You should not encounter any Finder intervention if you do not attempt to add an additional extension to the image.
