Is it possible that you are running out of room on your destination drive? That might be the cause of the 15 minute issue. So, check that out. Also, there may be some corruption in the DVD that is causing the interruption. If the space is low, freeing up some space may cure the problem and you can just proceed with Handbrake as you have been doing.
If all O.K. with the space, the procedure below is to be used only for personally made home movies, like your family DVDs. It should not be used to rip commercial DVDs.
Click on the DVD icon on your desktop to reveal the a window showing the DVD file structure.

Open the VIDEO_TS folder to reveal the movie components. (You can ignore the AUDIO_TS file, it is irrelevant. )

Copy, not move, to your desktop all of the files in the VIDEO_TS folder that have a VOB extension. Ignore the other files. Open the copied VOB files with Handbrake and convert them to Mp4 files. Drag the Mp4 files into iMovie for editing.
