How do you make reminders remind you of what you want to be reminded of?

I would like reminders to simple remind me to make a phone call tomorrow.
will it remind me without opening up Reminders?
How will reminders notify me?
I look back at all the previous reminders I have in history yet none of them have ever remind me of the specie reminder?
is there a simple way to get a reminder? I think I may be missing something?

Using iPhone => Set reminders on iPhone - Apple Support
