Trade In old MacPro for new

I'm purchasing a new MacPro for my son as gift. His current MacPro has cracked screen, device still works fine just busted screen (hard to see). After he gets his new MAC Pro (surprise) can he then turn in the old MAC for trade in value, or does it need to be done when a new one is purchased?

You can trade in whenever you want, but you only get a credit for a future purchase. So if you want to use the proceeds for the new Mac, you must send the old one in (and receive the credit) before you buy the new one.
