Hardwire printer directly to Mac desktop

Is it possible to hardwire my HP printer to my Mac desktop directly with an ethernet cable? Or do you need to run it through a modem or something? I did connect them directly with the ethernet cable but it does not seem to be printing.

I do have wireless printing but sometimes it doesn’t want to work and I thought it would be easier to just have it hardwired.
