I'm new to Thunderbolt an USB C. Many descriptions on the web, but nothing clearly.
With my new monitor (LG Utrafine) and mac mini i got two cable. A very long, described as Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 3 and a short, described as USB C. I would like to use the shorter "USB C"-Cable to prevent interferences. But ... is Thunderbolt just a protocol and the cable are the same?
As long as it’s connected to the Ultrafine’s Thunderbolt 3 port, either cable will work. However, LG recommends the Thunderbolt 3 cable: “Make sure to use supplied cable. Otherwise, this may cause the device to malfunction.”.
Thunderbolt cable insulation requirements are likely more stringent = possible explanation for your observation. Especially since LG are using the Thunderbolt insignia, meaning they're obliged to keep to spec. USV-C otoh is only a connector. interesting... using the original (long) thunderbolt cable, system reports say: bandwidth 40 Gbit/s. Using the USB-C cable (short) system report say 30 Gbit/s
