iCloud storage and backups

I recently moved over from Google Drive to iCloud. I understand that iCloud storage may remove directories not recently accessed from my local harddrive to save space. I am using Time Machine for backups. How do I insure those directories are still backed up?

If you don't have Optimize Storage turned on in your Mac then there will be a local copy that Time Machine can backup. The Optimize Storage setting is at Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID just above the iCloud Storage bar near the bottom right.

If you are using iCloud Photos there is also an Optimize Storage option for it in Photos Preferences.
