2010 iMacs being Mini Display Port outputs are not compatible with
Thunderbolt displays. Thunderbolt Displays can only be used with
Thunderbolt equipped Macs.
There was a big fuss over this when the TB display was first released
that it wasn't compatible with Display Port Macs.

As I said, Thunderbolt Displays can only be used with Thunderbolt Macs, period.
There are no adapters, no workarounds, or magic wands or incantations to change that
fact.

I'd like to correct myself, you cannot connect a Thunderbolt Display with a non Thunderbolt Mac. My apologies for misleading you.
