can't copy any files larger than 4GB

after updated the latest big sur, I can't copy any files larger than 4GB from a external usb device, no mater it's NTFS OR exFat format device. error code 100006. troubled me for days.

This also seems true of certain other MacOS utility programs such as the native Contacts app, which responds incredibly slowly past a certain database size and seems like no one has been responsible for updating and regression testing it for more than a decade. I use native apps when possible with the expectation that, unlike third-party apps which can come and go with the seasons, the native apps will always be available and will always be maintained and kept up to date with the changing environment and usage modes. The first of these two assumptions has held true in my experience but the assumption that they will always be maintained, regression tested and improved has not.

Can not empty trash from EXFAT or FAT external drive I have been using an EXFAT 1TB external ssd without any problem beetween my mac and windows and suddenly the deleted files in trash became unable to be emptied. This is what happened when I tried to empty trash. and this is what happened when I tried force delete the folder right from the finder. I can format the drive and I have finally found out that I could do rm -rf to empty the trash but I want to fix the issue to be like before. I have no problem at all deleting if I format it to Mac OS Extended but I am using it across several platform. Another thing is that the issue occurred after I mounted the drive to my Synology NAS to copy files to the NAS but I don't know if there is anything to do with it. Any help would be appreciated.

the NTFS and exFat format has no 4GB limit, only FAT32 has, and it was ok before the update. I do often copy files from my windows laptop to my macbook. the most important thing is this should not happen.

besides of this, also I found that my apple watch can't unlock my macbook as it was before the updating.

i have seen elsewhere that NTFS and exFat file sizes are limited to 4GB. if you don't need to share the external drive with a windows machine, you should format it as OS Extended (Journaled). the file limit for that format is some crazy number. it's measured in exabytes! a drive i use (16TB in size) for recording online videos with sound has most files that are >4GB. my largest video file is >85GB and i had no problems with saving or watching it.
