How do I stop getting text messages from unknown numbers advertising all different things?

You are not going to be able to stop those messages. What you can do is setup a separate tab in your Messages app to collect texts from those who are not in your contacts. If you want to try this then:
Open Settings ➔ Messages ➔ Filter Unknown Senders : Set this to ON.
