Poor FaceTime Connection. Only FaceTime

FaceTime has not been working smoothly for quite some time. When I talk on the phone my connection degrades quickly when I am a short distance from my router. This does not happen with Zoom on my phone or computer. Doesn't happen on my wife's computer with GoToMeeting or Google Meet. Doesn't happen with Roku 4k streaming in distant corners of the house. The house is 2500 sq ft and but the problems with facetime happen 20-30 feet away from the router. Yes, I have a ton of smart devices, but the problems only happen with facetime. What the heck?

I have had these problems with facetime with both my iphone 8 and now my iphone 12. My wife has had the problems with both of her iphones (we upgrade at the same time) as well.

I have fiber to the home with incoming wired speeds of 483 mbps down/483 mbps up (we pay for 500). This also happened when we paid for 1 gig earlier in the pandemic. I have tried two wireless routers including AmplifiHD AC1750 mesh router with two access points in various locations around the house. I've tried the base in two different areas of the house. My wifi speed ratings are consistently greater than 100 mbps up/down.

Today my new Luxul router arrived (Epic 3, AC 3100) and sure as sh*t the same issue happened on both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz. My speed readings around the house via wifi on my phone are 240+ mbps up and down. But Facetime still jumps, people can't hear me, and the video connection will say poor connection. This. should. not. be. an. issue. What is the problem here?

Same here: Facetime video connection is bad, freezes, black screen, but audio continues. No issues with Zoom.

Seems to be fixed by adjusting the maximum connection speed in my cheap Netgear 300+300 router. For both 2.4 and 5 gHz bands I have a choice of three speeds: 54, 145, and 300 Mbps. It was set for 300. Dropped it to 145 and Facetime is rock solid. No impact to stream and iThings in the house.

Our wifi population is

2 'droid fones

2 iPads

2 video streaming things (Apple TV and Roku)

3 security cameras

3 desktop computers (1 iMac and 2 Chromeboxes)

Something, probably the TV devices, were grabbing all available bandwidth. Naughty things.

I’ve also been experiencing this! Every. Single. FaceTime. Call. Everything is fine for about ten minutes, then all of a sudden, the video becomes glitchy, then comes back for a few seconds, then back in error mode, when it gets to this step, everything is long past the point of no return. It literally never comes back. No sound. No video. The phone behaves as if I have a poor WiFi signal. But I’m not even on WiFi, and I will have full signal on 5G. One point of interest, which could be nothing, is that this only happens when FaceTiming my best friend, who also has the 12 pro max. When FaceTiming an 11 or Xr, I never experience any issues.

Hi karldavidolson,

We understand that you're experiencing issues with the FaceTime connection your iPhone, and we want to help.

We'd like to ask a few questions to help isolate the issue further.

  1. Which iOS version is your iPhone currently running? Find the software version on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
  2. Does this issue only happen when your iPhone is connected to your home Wi-Fi network, or does it occur with other networks as well?
  3. Since these issues began, have you had a chance to go through the steps and information outlined in the "If you have connection or sound quality issues with FaceTime" part of this link? If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch If so, did those steps seem to improve the issue at all?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have the same issue. Fiber (350mb download and 180mb upload), Synology mesh network connected to the supplier’s router. iPhone 12 with the latest iOS. Then after few seconds I’m starting to get “poor connection”. If I turn off the WiFi to 4g/5G it’s all good and smooth. Connection on the other side is also fiber 180mb/150mb) and with other friends who are on internet cable). That never happened before I moved to fiber network.

also turned off WiFi-Assist on the cellular data and that didn’t help. Also tried resetting network. Same reaction with “poor connection”.

Hello, I have same issue. It tells that poor connection using facetime after several minutes. The video is cut but the audio is maintained. With other video call applications, WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams, etc I have no problem. It happens to me and other family members. I currently have iPhone 6S (ios 14.2) and other family members who have the same problem with iPhone 6 (ios12)

please solve this problem, It's been happening for several weeks and I have no Wi-Fi connection problems

Thanks!

I am having the same issues with FaceTime. I had the 7s and FaceTime ran smoothly until my service provider merged with another and I had continuous problems with FaceTime. It was never resolved. I upgraded to the iPhone 11 and it FaceTime ran smoothly but now (a month into using this phone) I am having the same issue with FaceTime all over again. I can answer a call and see a black screen, I hear the other ends audio just fine and then seconds later the poor connection screen appears and stays on the ~entirety~ of the call, and I cannot see the other person except for 1 or 2 seconds here and there before it freezes and says poor connection again. About 10 minutes in the audio starts going in and out also resorting me to just hang up. Please if somebody could provide an answer to this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I have tried that and it still doesn’t work. The only thing that works is to disconnect myself from our WiFi and use my cellular data, which seems ridiculous to me since our cell service is spotty, at best. Because of this issue, I also can’t use my iPad for FaceTiming since it only works with WiFi. It is so weird that the WiFi works for streaming but not for FaceTime. But, thanks again for the response.
