Even if you don’t enroll in Face ID, the TrueDepth camera intelligently activates to support attention aware features, like dimming the display if you aren't looking at your iPhone or lowering the volume of alerts if you're looking at your device. For example, when using Safari, your device will check to determine if you're looking at your device and turns the screen off if you aren’t. If you don’t want to use these features, you can open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and disable Attention Aware Features.

You asked if you could opt out of Apple collecting "eye tracking" information.
There is nothing to opt out of. Apple does not collect any such information from your device.
Zach, I'm sure your a great person, but you're going to have to give this one a rest. This is not a scientific chat site. This is a user to user iPhone support forum. People come and ask a technical questions about how to use a feature on their phone or how to fix an issue which they can't solve on their own.
You asked a question. We provided an answer which is clear that Apple is not tracking your eye movement. You have now morphed this into a discussion about the IR sensor always being on. It is. That's the answer. We have no control over it. We can't help you turn it off. If you are concerned about it, you can provide feedback to Apple via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
Or you can stop using smart phones, ALL of which have constant on IR Sensors.
Otherwise, there is no point in continuing this discussion. This is my last response to this.
Stay safe and healthy out there.

check this out. And if you want to try, disable your Face ID or use an older generation iPhone without faceid and look through another camera at the front of the iPhone in a dark setting.
They are not "collecting" eye tracking information.
So. What...
Apple is NOT collecting any data from this. It is completely irrelevant to the question you asked.
Your question has been answered. Please move on.

every iPhone even before Face ID was a thing strobes IR LEDs while in use.
Make a phone call, then put the phone to your ear. Does the screen darken? If so, that would the proximity sensor doing exactly what it was designed for in every single model of the iPhone, and all other smartphones on the market.
NONE of this has anything to do with the question you came here to ask.
You have not asked a legitimate technical support question.
The article you have linked to has absolutely NOTHING to do with your original question... or iPhones for that matter.
Please take your tinfoil hat fantasies and imagined science somewhere else.
I don't give any credibility to concerns about the IR sensor always being on, so no, I didn't look for or consider a solution to something which is not an issue to begin with. I'll say it again. If this is an issue to you, you shouldn't own any smart devices with sensors in them.
Hi KiltedTim (great username by the way)
I’m sorry that the discussion has gone on a tangent. My original question was if there was a way to deactivate or opt out of what I presumed was an eye tracking feature using the iPhone flood illuminator. I discovered this accidentally while using an oculus vr headset near my iPhone.
Anyone can see for themselves that there is a strobing light emanating from the notch of their iPhone using another camera in a dimly lit setting. This illuminator is always on although it’s purpose is for Face ID authentication.
why is the led always strobing?
im going to tie in a few other social media platforms to this thread and see if we can diversify the already exceptional responses I’ve been getting.
Thank you for your response. If I were to capture a video of multiple iPhones constantly strobing LEDs from the flood Illuminator (while unlocked at the Home Screen) with my oculus rift, would you reconsider your position?
Also I don’t assume eye tracking is this evil conspiracy, when I was in school there were a lot of tech companies interested in it for VR and for selling user information to advertisers.
You told me matter of factly that the ir illuminators are not always on then proceeded to back track up to your last response “IR sensor is always on”
I’m asking about the IR flood illuminator located NEXT to the IR sensor.
My question remains unanswered, if you don’t have a good understanding of sensors and detectors please allow for others to respond.
Is the IR flood Illuminator always on? ( it is and I will upload proof of this later). Can I opt out of this. Is the IR sensor always collecting information?
Sigh........Another tin foil hat conspiracy. You're handling this one well. I'll leave it your able hands.

I think the key word here is "imagining".
