If I tap on my screen to try and get to auto focus, I get a yellow box which allows me to adjust the brightness but no blue box to allow manual focus. When I just tap to engage the auto focus, the small object, a gem, is still blurred and the focus seems to be on the background instead of the gem. Any advice?

For your question about locking the focus on a specific part of the preview, you'd long-press the area to which you'd like to have the focus locked.
For your other question regarding 'manual focus' with no blue box, we're unsure what you meant by this.
