Trying to connect Mid 2014 Macbook Pro as extended monitor for iMac Late 2012.

I'm using Thunderbolt 2 connector but neither device is detecting the other display. What am I doing wrong?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

MacBook Pros could never act a monitor for anything.

A limited of sub-set of iMacs could be external monitors for another Mac made prior to 2020 and not running Big Sur. So theoretically, you can use you 2012 iMac as an external monitor for your 2014 MacBook Pro if the MBP is runnig no higher OS than 10.15 Catalina.

It will be mirrored, not extended. And your 2012 iMac must be running no higher macOs than OS 10.13 'High Sierra,

The now-archived Apple article on Target Display mode has info on cabling:

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

Apple have fully deprecated this technology and will not be updatd the support article, so you are mostly on your own with this.
