Bir Sur VNC question

Hi,

I have a Mac Mini at home that I often need to access remotely. My old Mac Mini (too old to run Big Sur) works great with VNC. I can update and restart it as many times as I like and re-connect.

But on the new M1 chip one with Big Sur, when I restart the Mac Mini, I can't remote into it not with VNC or Slashtop. I need to walk up to it first, enter my password and then it is ready for remote connections again. Is there any way to avoid this and allow remote restarts as well ? it is a major pain for me to access (physically) this machine, it has no monitor or keyboard. so now I had to add that temporarily.

thanks

claus

Greetings, Claus!

Thanks for reaching out ton the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you're having issues using third party software to screen share with your Mac minis. Does this happen with the screen sharing software built into the Mac?

Please start by following these steps to Turn Mac screen sharing on or off on all computers. Then, check out this article for How to turn your Mac on or off and restart both computers.

Once restarted, use the first article and re-enable all the settings on both computers to screen share and try to Share the screen of another Mac.

Let us know the results and have a great day!

I have had the same issue. I have a 2019 16inch mbp. I generally use real VNC for

the server software. I uninstalled it and turned on screen sharing in the sharing preferences, thinking maybe the built in remote client might load as a service before the login screen would appear but it didn’t. I know this is a security measure but it would be a real problem if one was off site and the power went out and the Mac restarted. There is no access to that computer. I would hope there might be an option to allow remote control of the Mac at the login screen in a future update.

I don't have that software, but it sounds like an intended security measure in Big Sur; you might want to check with the developer(s). Apple has implemented a whole slew of new security measures and you actually also have to enable booting from an external by going to recovery > security settings. No idea, but try that as a test since you are treating the Mini like an external (so to speak) if booting it remotely.
