True, if the OP wants to buy a newer Mac there are many options available to them, including the Apple Refurbished program, buying a new Mac mini (nice solution!), buy a used Mac from a reputable reseller such as Macofalltrades.com and Macsales.com.
If they buy new from Apple, there is also financing options available.
In a word yes a new Mac is necessary. A 2009 does not have the hardware to run current versions of Mac OS.
