You might check Activity Monitor to see how much RAM is in use. If you run too many processes concurrently and run out of physical RAM, then the OS uses the hard drive for additional memory. This causes severe system slowdown and disk thrashing that leads to applications crashing or quitting.
Other causes include corrupted cache or preference files. You might try a couple of things:
1. Boot into
safe mode and operate for a while. See if the problem stops. Note that some things will no longer be usable while in safe mode.
2. Create a new user account. Log into the new account and see if the problem ceases.
