i have A friend who now lives in Canada, does it cost me to text them through iPhone message?

If by iPhone message you mean iMessage (blue bubbles) then no. There is no cost for those.

If you mean SMS (green bubble) then it may cost you yes. Contact your carrier for exact charges for international SMS.
