SD Card Reader

While loading pictures onto an SD card, it appears my reader has stopped working. It appears to still be recognized in my hardware, but I cannot get it to mount multiple SD cards - I have tried restarting the computer and cleaning out the port numerous times.

This is for a Macbook Pro, late 2012. This issue appears to have arisen after I performed first aid on an external hard drive that was acting up - any chance these things are related? Any suggestions as to how I can get it to recognize my SD cards again?

Thanks!

Check if safe mode helps

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

NoteSafe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.
