Choosing old programs from backup and do they work with the new operative?

Hi there

I have more than one question so I hope it´s alright to put it in the same thread.

After more than ten years my Mac Book Pro has became unreliable, so I´m about to go for a new one. To get prepared for the change I need to know a few things that I haven´t found in any "support".

The OS at the time is El Capitain which ist the highest my computer can handle. I guess Big Sur comes with the new machine.

I have a lot of work and programs/apps on a back up disk and need to transfer most of it to a new computer.

How can I choose to restore some of the apps but not all of them? (Last time I tried there was no option, I had to restore the whole bunch, and one of them contains some **** I can´t uninstall. (Ironically it´s a malware program ... )

When the new operative is Big Sur; do the old apps still work? For example iWorks 09´. I have a lot written with pages. Does the new computer/operative work with older versions of iWork or do I need to invest in a newer version? Can it in that case read the old files or do I need to go via some converter?

Best regards

Tobi

Documents are not 32 or 64-bit dependent, so yes, the very latest Pages (v10.3.5 as of this post) can open Pages '05 thru Pages '09 documents, and later versions. The caveat is that if the older documents use features from their older applications that are not supported in the new Pages, then it may not open those documents, or can present the content differently.

No 32-bit applications are supported in macOS Catalina (10.15.7), or in Big Sur (11.0.1). That means that Apple's iWorks '09 suite, iPhoto v9, iMovie 9.0.9, Microsoft Office 2008/2011, any non-subscription Adobe software (e.g. CS2 - CS6) and probably most of your ten-year old software won't be compatible with the preceding operating systems.

Apple introduced Photos with macOS 10.10.3, and Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are not their counterparts found in the iWork '09 Suite, but can open most of the documents created by iWork '09, except where certain features were not implemented in the later applications. Microsoft now supports Microsoft 365, a subscription plan, or the single-purchase Office 2019 for Mac. There are replacement applications for those that do not want an Adobe subscription.

There is a free application (Go64) that can show you what is 32-bit , and what is 64-bit compiled applications. In many cases, you may be faced with current versions of older software that may or may not cost to upgrade, or old software that is no longer produced.

Thanks a lot for responding and substantial information!

I downloaded the Go64 App and as expected it showed an awful lot of programs that are not compatible with a newer system. It revealed also a lot of stuff that I don´t need so I can manually free more space on the hard drive =)

Though there´s still a question that is unclear to me. Can the newer version of pages read the old files created with 32 bits?
