Amazon refurbished airpods - why no Applecare?

I just bought a pair of refurbished Airpods Pro from Amazon in anticipation of sending my original pair back because of a rattle i'm hearing in the right earbud. However, I went to go purchase the AppleCare for this, and it won't let me? What gives?!?!
