If this Nikon Z50 is a new camera to market Apple will only

make it compatible with its current macOS which is Big Sur.

Apple does not allow the Camera RAW database of older OS's

to be updated for new cameras.

Just because Nikon cameras all share the .nef extension for their RAW files does not mean

that they are the same, each camera writes the RAW file slightly differently and therefore

when a new model like the Z50 is released, the information for its RAW files has to be given

to Adobe, Apple, Affinity and any other RAW file processors so they can update their RAW

file database so these new files can be read.

This also goes for cameras from other manufacturers, Canon, Olympus, Leica etc etc etc.

If it is important for you to read the Nikon Z50 files on Catalina then download and install

the free Adobe DNG Converter. This converts the proprietary RAW file from a camera to the

.dng file format (Digital Negative), these files will be able to be read by your system.

Adobe tends to add new cameras to its RAW database far quicker than Apple.

The Nikon Z50 is supported by Apple's Camera RAW in Catalina and Big Sur.

I just downloaded a RAW Z50 image from dpreview, and it was immediately displayed in the Finder on Big Sur 11.0.1 — because I have Affinity Photo set to display images. When I changed this back to the Finder, the Z50 NEF image continued to be displayed in the Finder as an icon, and responded correctly to Quick Look.

Thanks for your reply

I tried as your suggestion but it doesn’t work

i have Catalina 10.15.7

what is Affinity Photo?

i don’t find it in the configuration

I use Nikon nx for transferring photos in jpg and in that case you can see them but if you do a copy of a nef file it didn’t work... I have a card reader connected to the computer usually so I see the files and decide which is the one I am interested to copy... also in that case you cannot see the thumbnails of z50 but I can see the one of a d3000 that I also have

I see. I had Catalina installed on five different Macs, including betas, and never had one crash. I'm on my 2015 5K iMac which is running Catalina. I'm afraid to install Big Sur on it because of reports of problems installing on Fusion drives. I have Big Sur installed on an external SSD when I feel like booting it. I have Big Sur installed on the other four.

I forgot, I have a 2012 iMac with Catalina and Mojave installed.
