To update software see ➡️ Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
To sync pictures to iCloud go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud and turn on Photos. Note that this will sync photos to iCloud. Since it is a sync, if you delete a photo from your phone it will also be deleted from iCloud.
