extending the hard drive capacity

I am not sure if I am using the correct terminology here, so apologies for that.

The 1tb internal hard drive if my 2009 IMac is full (mainly used for photos).

How can i extend the capacity of the hard drive? I understand replacing it with a 4tb internal hard drive is near to impossible.

Is there an option to connect a 4tb external hard drive and use it for iPhoto’s and keep the existing data in the iMac?

many thanks!

I agree with rkaufmann87 about adding an external hard drive. However, I suggest you consider an external SSD as it will be so much faster and when you upgrade your Mac it will be more in line with the speed of any new Mac you'd get. I suggest one of these: Envoy Pro EX with USB 3

You should get an external External Hard Disk and move your media (Photo library, movie library, music library) to the External Hard Disk. Extremely simple to do and will give you back hard drive capacity. I would strongly recommend one of these:
