i just updated to big sur on my macbook air but want to go back to my former update how can I get back to macos sierra 10.12.6?
Well you would have erase your macs SSD and then restore Sierra from the backup you
made prior to upgrading to Big Sur.
To erase your SSD you need to boot to your Recovery HD open Disk Utility
click View in the menubar and select Show All Devices.
Highlight the Disk not any of the indented Volumes and click Erase.
Give the Disk a name
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Scheme: GUID Partition Map
Click Erase.
When done quite Disk Utility
Click on Restore from Time Machine.
Select the backup you made before upgrading to Big Sur and press Restore.

So far great info but i get to the "APPLE SSD SM0512F MEdia" and is that what i erase or the "container disk1" indention just beneath it? Also both have the "erase" command grey so I cant do it. Is there a permission i have to change to erase it? Thanks
You highlight the Disk, the Disk will be Apple SSD Sm0512F Media,
anything indented is a Volume.
Can you share a screenshot of what you see in Disk Utility. Have you booted up to your Recovery HD.
I slowed down and re-did your instructions (boot in recovery mode!) And its restoring right now so looks like you fixed it.
