my imac will not let me do symbols, how do i fix it?

What language keyboard, and what kind of symbols? Have you tried invoking the Emojis & Symbols (character) viewer with the control+command+spacebar keyboard shortcut? There is a search field in that panel that lets you track down categories of characters (arrow), or specific characters by name. Then you double-click to insert it in the current text receiving document or this editor.
