Macbook Air M1: No 4K@60Hz possible on my 32" 4K BenQ EW3280U

Last week I received the MacBook Air 13" 2020 with the M1 chip. To my surprise, it fails to output 4K@60Hz via UBC-C on the BenQ EW3280U, resolving only 4K@30Hz.

I also bought a USB-C Thunderbolt cable (USB C to DisplayPort Cable 8K@60Hz Maxonar 4K@60Hz/144Hz/120Hz 5K@60Hz 2K@240Hz Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort Cable HBR3 DP 1.4

) which also outputs 4K@30Hz maximum.

Both of deze cables work on this monitor 4K@60Hz with 2 other tested devices.

What is the problem on this?

Right now M1 do not support 4K 60Hz over DisplayPort Interface (which going through USB-C or Thunderbolt).

You need to use USB-C to HDMI Adapter like Belkin F2**038btBLK.

Works fine, support 4K, 60Hz, HDR in Netflix.

Same problem for me.

M1 MBA connected to a 4K Asus PB287Q with a USB-C - DP cable that support 4K@60Hz.

I'm stuck at 30Hz for all scaled resolutions that System Preference offers.

I've downloaded SwitchResX Control, and indeed, almost all resolutions offered at 60Hz don't work...

I've used the monitor and cable with another computer at 4K@60Hz, no issues.

Also, I have a 2K Philips monitor at home which works perfectly at 60Hz.

Really weird !

Let's hope that 11.2 will fix this issue

Newest MacBooc Pro, Big Sur 11.2, Benq EW3280U connected by Thunderbolt. ONLY 30Hz!!! Carl! Apple keep silence here. And one more sad thing nobody told. Internal display work on the same 30Hz. On Big Sur 11.1 I saw this digits, and now they hide it from "About My Mac".

APPLE! Have the courage to admit the problem and let us know that you are at least working to fix it!

I have this exact Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort cable linked by HLN98; I'm using a BenQ EX2780Q and can't get 1440p144hz with my MBA M1. Really frustrating considering my 2013 MBP was able to do 1440p120hz on the monitor no problem (probably a limitation of older hardware) and 2016 MBP was able to do 1440p144hz.

Different model monitor but the problem is pretty much the same of not being able to use maximum resolution. I've tried USB C to USB C, USB C to HDMI, and USB C to DisplayPort... All maxed out at 1440p60hz for me with the M1. Apple please fix lol

My Macbook Air M1 can drive my 55 OLED Alienware AW5520QF display at 4k@60Hz, but NOT at 4k@120Hz. (USB-C to Displayport cable capabile of 8k@60Hz)

Using the same cable and monitor with my Windows PC can drive it at 4k@120Hz.

In the description of the Macbook Air M1 says: "macOS is the most advanced desktop operating system in the world". :(

I've got the "screen going black every few seconds" version of this issue, where the 60Hz options are available but have that problem. Here's the halfway workaround I've found:

I noticed that different resolution settings go black at different frequencies. On most resolutions, it goes black every ~12 seconds, but on these settings, it happens every ~4 seconds:

  • "3008 × 1692 (low resolution)"
  • "2304 × 1296"
  • "2304 × 1296 (low resolution)"
  • "1920 × 1080"
  • "1504 × 846"

These values will occasionally work correctly, not showing the black screen issue, and if I switch back-and-forth between a setting on this list and one not on this list, e.g. between "2304 × 1296" and "2560 × 1600", I generally end up with it working after around 2–5 tries. Since these settings go black more quickly, you only have to wait a couple seconds to see if it's working.

Well not fixed in 11.3 Beta on my mac mini which seems to have much bigger problems than Mac Book Air which can display in some low refresh rates. In addition Bluetooth on Mac mini is almost unuseable (range is appalling), and the thing reboots every night leaving the screen on constantly after the reboot. First thing I do when I login is send a crash report.

hi there,

Are you using DP to DP cable connecting MBP to the HyperDrive dock or DP to USB-C cable connecting directly from Dell S3221QS to MBP? I connect DEll to my MBA with HDMI through the HyperDrive. And does Dell connect to MBP when MBP wakes up from sleep? That is the main problem I experience, Dell either isn't detected, or when it is weird things happen. Images are attached. Apple Support has all these images but no resolution to the issue.
