"Card Not Added Contact Your Card Issuer" error with Visa Debit card on more than 1 device

Hi folks, I'm at a loss as is Apple Pay support and my Card issuer. So..

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 4 and MacBook Pro 2019 16" and I have a Visa Debit Card that I've used for years on all 3 devices no problem until a week ago when it disappeared from my watch. I thought okay I'll try to re-add it however I'm getting the "Card Not Added" error.

Interestingly enough I have another Visa Debit card from the same issuer and that worked no problem on all three devices, and I have a mastercard with the same results, no worries there! It's just this one particular card that I have.

I should stress that the card currently is installed on the phone and works fine, but whenever I add it to my watch or Mac I get that error message. When removing the card from the phone and then installing it to the watch, it works. Same applies when removing it from both the phone and watch, installing it on the Mac no problem.

Note: I currently at the time of typing this have iOS 14.3, WatchOS 7.2 and macOS 11.1 installed but prior had 14.2.1, 7.1 and 11.0.1 of the respected OSes.

  • I unpaired the watch and re-paired it
  • Signed out of iCloud on all devices
  • Set up Watch as new
  • rebooted all the devices
  • Removed where possible my card details in AppleID and iCloud
  • Reset the passcode on my phone and watch
  • Tried to install the card via the card issuer's bank app
  • Cleared the wallet on all three devices
  • Changed payment method in Apple ID
  • Tried talking to my card issuer who then told me to talk to Apple
  • Talked to Apple who then told me to talk to the card issuer (currently in that loop right now)

Long story short is that it appears I can only add the card to ONE device. The Card issuer did try to check from their end and did tell me that "You have too many devices tied to that card and you need to remove them from the Wallet App". Not really sure what they meant by that and after asking more how to do it, they don't either. So I went through and repeated everything that I have tried where possible to remove any information about my cards in iCloud, Apple ID, devices, etc.

Currently at the state that the card issuer is sending me out a new card to replace this troublesome one, but I would love to see a feature where I can either remove old cards stuck on the cloud manually or some more transparency or help from both sources of support rather than going back and forth between the card issuer and Apple to get this resolved.

I may have done more troubleshooting than what I've listed so please folks let me know what I may have missed and I could then tell you if I have tried it or not. Either way my mind is frazzled with this situation and I do enough of this kind of work AT work, but doing it outside of work causes nothing but stress. hahah.

Thanks folks! Hopefully this will help others out there report this issue and at least then see where the problem lies.

On a related note, I had another card applied that I didn't want applied anymore yet that still lingers in the choices of cards to add to Apple Pay (has been removed and unused for a few days now) nor is it tied to any devices. So that's another problem I'm having..

Okay! After a week of being sent back and forth it turned out that the card issuer needed to remove old devices from their end. So if you folks do fall in to that situation, please persist and ensure they check that from their end before escalating to Apple.

Really would have been better if Apple and card issuers had a better line of support and communication between each other if this is to showcase the bank and Apple's technology together..
